British rapper and actor Ghetts has been sentenced to 12 years in prison following a fatal hit-and-run incident that led to the death of a 20-year-old student in England.
The artiste, born Justin Clarke-Samuel, had earlier pleaded guilty to causing the death of Yabin Tamang by dangerous driving. He also admitted to a separate charge of dangerous driving.
The tragic collision occurred on October 18 in Ilford, East London. Reports presented in court indicated that Ghetts had consumed alcohol before driving and was allegedly travelling at around 60mph on a residential road when he struck the victim.
Instead of remaining at the scene, he reportedly drove home and was arrested the following day. Tamang succumbed to his injuries two days later in hospital.
The case drew significant public attention, partly due to Ghetts’ prominence in the music industry and his appearance in the Netflix series Supacell. His sentencing now concludes the legal proceedings surrounding the incident.
In addition to the 12-year custodial term, the court ordered that Ghetts be banned from driving for 17 years following his release.
