A cloud of uncertainty surrounds Iran’s participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a development that could unexpectedly brighten Nigeria’s chances of reaching the global showpiece.

Mehdi Taj, president of the Football Federation Islamic Republic of Iran, disclosed that the country’s involvement in the tournament is in serious doubt following escalating military tensions involving the United States and Israel.

Speaking to Iranian sports outlet Varzesh3, Taj admitted that recent attacks and the tense political climate have made it difficult for the national team to prepare with confidence or optimism for the tournament. According to him, the worsening conflict has created uncertainty for players, officials, and supporters, particularly regarding travel to the United States.

Iran has already been drawn into Group G and is scheduled to play its matches in Los Angeles and Seattle.

The tournament will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19 under the supervision of FIFA.

However, the worsening diplomatic standoff between Washington and Tehran, alongside past travel restrictions on Iranian citizens, has raised concerns about visa approvals, security considerations, and broader political implications.

FIFA has stated it is monitoring the situation closely but has not issued a definitive ruling on Iran’s status. The governing body is expected to weigh security, legal, and sporting factors before making any decision.

Should Iran withdraw or be unable to participate, adjustments to the qualification structure may follow. Such a scenario could provide renewed hope for nations that narrowly missed out during qualification — including Nigeria’s Super Eagles — who remain in contention for a place at the expanded tournament.

While nothing has been confirmed, the situation highlights how global events beyond football can influence the world’s biggest sporting competition. For Nigeria and other hopeful nations, any official decision concerning Iran could significantly reshape the road to the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
