Nigerian Afrobeats star Asake has revealed that performing in Yoruba almost cost him his music career in its early stages, as promoters repeatedly denied him opportunities because of his language choice.
In an interview with Famous TV, the Sungba crooner shared that many show organizers rejected him, urging him to adopt a different style rather than sing in Yoruba. Despite the pressure, he remained committed to his identity and artistic direction.
“At some point, a lot of people said no to me. They didn’t allow me to perform at shows because I spoke Yoruba. But thank God I didn’t stop, and I kept believing in myself,” he said.
Asake emphasized that perseverance and self-belief helped him overcome the setbacks. Rather than conform, he chose consistency, which eventually became a defining element of his success.
The singer credited his breakthrough to resilience and faith, noting that his journey reflects endurance and confidence in his craft.
“How I got to where I am today is by God’s grace, self-belief, consistency and endurance… I am so happy for myself.”
His story highlights the importance of cultural authenticity in music and serves as encouragement for upcoming artists to stay true to their roots, even when faced with industry pressure.
