Seyi Shay reflects on mentorship and friendship with Wizkid: “He’s a genius, I learned a lot from him”

Nigerian singer and songwriter Seyi Shay has opened up about her long-standing friendship and creative bond with Wizkid, describing him as one of the biggest influences on her music career.

Speaking on a recent episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast, the “Irawo” crooner recalled how their friendship blossomed during their early studio sessions and collaborations. She noted that Wizkid not only featured on her hit song “Crazy” but also had her doing backing vocals on some of his own tracks.

According to Seyi Shay, beyond their musical chemistry, Wizkid offered her priceless advice about surviving and thriving in the Nigerian entertainment industry.

“I did Crazy with Wizkid. I featured him on the song, and he featured me on one of his too. I also did backing vocals for a couple of his other songs then. We became genuine friends,” she said.

She went on to praise Wizkid’s unmatched creativity and work ethic, sharing that she was amazed the first time she saw him record while eating.

“I realised he’s actually so smart and so talented. I’ve seen him record while eating — that was mad to me. He’s like a magician, and I’m always drawn to people with that kind of inhuman talent,” she added.

Seyi Shay further described Wizkid as someone whose wisdom and guidance helped her navigate the often tricky entertainment scene.

“He used to advise me a lot about how people behave in this industry,” she said, reflecting fondly on how their friendship shaped her growth as an artist.
