Afrobeats sensation Asake has opened up about the balance between humility and ego in the music industry, stressing that humility is often misinterpreted as weakness.
Speaking in a recent chat, the singer explained that audiences tend to respect artists who project confidence and ego more than those who downplay their success.
“As an artist, if you’re humble, they take you for granted. But if you have ego, they feel like you’re not accessible and they like you more. People would rather see the results than watch you explain how you achieved them,” he said.
Asake noted that people rarely appreciate the effort behind success, adding that it is better for artists to focus on delivering results instead of seeking validation.
The statement stirred reactions online, with some fans agreeing that humility can be exploited. One user wrote, “Humility is a trap. People want access to you when they shouldn’t.” Others compared his comments to Wizkid’s advice to “stay humble,” while some cited Davido as an example of an artist whose bold personality enhances his brand.
