Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Tiwa Savage has urged fellow artists to remain humble despite their global fame, warning that success in the music industry is fleeting.
Speaking during an interview with Hot 97 FM in New York, the award-winning singer described artists as mere “ambassadors” of Afrobeats, stressing that pride could easily lead to a downfall.
“We are just ambassadors, we are just like the faces of Afrobeats,” Savage said. “That’s why we can’t let it get into our heads, because we are just vessels and there can be somebody else. God can take it away just like that. So, you have to be grounded, you have to be humble.”
She added that losing fame after experiencing it would be devastating:
“Imagine coming this far and then falling. That is worse than never tasting fame. I would rather have never seen in my life than seen and lose my sight.”
Savage also applauded the new wave of Afrobeats stars shaping the culture.
On Ayra Starr, she said: “I love Ayra Starr, it’s almost an obsession. I see myself in her, but I see a more confident one. If I saw an article that my skirt was too short, I might wear trousers next time. But Ayra would wear an even shorter skirt. I love her confidence.”
On Tems, she praised her mysterious aura and preference for privacy, describing it as a unique quality that sets her apart.
She also hailed Tanzanian superstar Diamond Platnumz for his talent and for “putting his community on the global map.”
Savage emphasised that humility is not only key to sustaining success but also a way of honouring God, noting that no artist is bigger than the Afrobeats movement itself.
