Lionel Messi and Inter Miami have reportedly agreed to a new contract that will keep the Argentine forward at the club beyond the 2026 FIFA World Cup. A source close to the negotiations revealed that an official announcement is expected within the next two weeks.
The deal would see Messi, who turns 39 in 2026, continue playing in Major League Soccer (MLS) well after the tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. This move suggests the legendary player could finish his professional career in the MLS.
Messi joined Inter Miami in 2023 following a challenging stint at Paris Saint-Germain. Prior to that, he spent nearly two decades at FC Barcelona, where he claimed numerous honors, including 10 La Liga titles and 4 UEFA Champions League trophies.
He also led Argentina to World Cup victory in 2022 and has indicated interest in defending the title in 2026.
Despite Inter Miami’s early exit from the playoffs, Messi was named MLS MVP for the 2024 season.
