The Federal Ministry of Education has revealed that the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in honour of the late President Muhammadu Buhari is a tribute to his strong commitment to education and national development.

In a statement signed by Folasade Boriowo, Director of Press at the ministry, it was disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the change during a special Federal Executive Council (FEC) session dedicated to honouring Buhari’s legacy.

Speaking at the session, President Tinubu described the late leader as a statesman whose administration prioritised security, economic recovery, institutional reforms, and the fight against corruption.

“The Honourable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, on behalf of the entire education sector, expresses deep appreciation to President Tinubu for this decision to immortalise the late President Muhammadu Buhari through the renaming of the University of Maiduguri, Borno State, as Muhammadu Buhari University of Maiduguri,” the statement read.

The ministry noted that the move symbolises Buhari’s lifelong advocacy for human capital development and highlights his administration’s policies such as the Anchor Borrowers’ Programme, Treasury Single Account, Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, and social investment schemes.

Dr. Alausa added that the gesture reflects President Tinubu’s recognition of education as a foundation for national progress.

“This honour not only preserves Buhari’s legacy but also reinforces the government’s belief in education as the bedrock of sustainable development. The Ministry remains committed to upholding the values of service, integrity, and excellence that both President Buhari and President Tinubu represent,” the statement concluded.
