Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has revealed a memorable conversation he once had with the late President Muhammadu Buhari, highlighting the former leader’s passion for the less privileged.

Speaking during the third-day prayer for Buhari in Daura, Obi said the former president appealed to him to always prioritise the welfare of the poor.

“I met the late Muhammadu Buhari while I was campaigning, and his words have never left me. He told me, ‘Please care for poor Nigerians.’ That’s something I’ll never forget,” Obi stated.

Describing Buhari as a humble leader who consistently championed the cause of ordinary Nigerians, Obi said the late president’s life reflected his belief in service.

“Buhari lived and died with the poor in his heart. His leadership philosophy was about serving the people, especially those in need,” he noted.

Obi urged today’s leaders to emulate Buhari’s commitment to humanity, stressing the importance of compassion and accountability in governance.

“We must all serve this country with sincerity because, eventually, we will give an account before God,” he added.

The late president, who died in London after a brief illness, was buried in Daura, Katsina State, according to Islamic rites. His funeral drew thousands, including President Bola Tinubu and other top dignitaries.
