The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, July 15, 2025, a public holiday in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday in London at the age of 82.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, following the approval of President Bola Tinubu. The move aligns with the seven-day national mourning period previously declared by the Presidency to honour Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s development.

In a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Magdalene Ajani, Tunji-Ojo described Buhari as a leader known for his integrity and lifelong dedication to national service.

“This holiday is a tribute to the former President’s unwavering service, his role in shaping Nigeria’s democratic path, and his legacy in governance and leadership,” the minister stated.

He urged Nigerians to use the day to reflect on Buhari’s values and to uphold the ideals he represented, including unity, patriotism, and national progress.

“As earlier announced by President Tinubu, national flags will continue to fly at half-mast throughout the mourning period, which runs from Sunday, July 13 to Saturday, July 19, 2025,” the statement added.

The government extended heartfelt condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians across the country, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
