Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that he would serve only a single term as president if he secures the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential ticket for the 2027 general election.

Amaechi made the pledge during an interview on Politics Today, a current affairs programme aired on Channels Television and anchored by Seun Okinbaloye.

He explained that his one-term commitment is aimed at preserving Nigeria’s political equilibrium, particularly the informal zoning arrangement between the North and South. Amaechi argued that since President Bola Tinubu, a southerner, is expected to complete a four-year term by 2027, another southern candidate should serve one additional term before power rotates back to the North.

“The current structure demands respect for an unwritten understanding—eight years for the South, eight years for the North,” Amaechi stated.

Reflecting on his past opposition to the Goodluck Jonathan-led administration, Amaechi recalled rejecting the PDP’s move to retain power in the South after an earlier agreement promised a shift to the North.

“I stood against PDP back then because they broke an agreement. I warned that sidelining the North would destabilise the country. In the same way, I believe the South must now complete its time,” he said.

Pressed on whether he would stick to a one-term presidency if elected under the ADC, the former Rivers governor affirmed, “Of course.”

He added, “Nigerians know me. I don’t make promises I cannot fulfill.”

Amaechi also used the interview to criticise President Tinubu’s administration, claiming that living conditions have worsened for ordinary citizens under the current government.

The former minister is among a growing list of political figures backing the ADC as a coalition platform for opposition forces aiming to unseat the APC in 2027.
