A SpaceX Starship prototype exploded on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, during a static fire test at the company’s Starbase facility in Texas, marking a significant setback in the spacecraft’s ongoing development.

The explosion occurred as engineers prepared the vehicle for its much-anticipated 10th test flight. Though dramatic, the incident did not result in any injuries, and all personnel at the site were confirmed safe.

Initial findings suggest that a malfunction in one of the Raptor engines during the test may have triggered the blast. The explosion highlights the inherent risks and technical challenges of developing powerful launch vehicles for deep space missions.

This mishap comes shortly after SpaceX CEO Elon Musk engaged in a heated online exchange with former U.S. President Donald Trump on X (formerly Twitter), though the two events are unrelated.

Starship is central to Musk’s long-term vision for interplanetary travel, with plans to eventually support missions to the Moon and Mars. SpaceX is expected to review the incident thoroughly before resuming testing.
