Nigerian singer Simi has responded to widespread reactions after an old tweet she posted in 2012 resurfaced online and sparked debate across social media.

Old Tweet Triggers Backlash

The resurfaced post, originally shared on March 14, 2012, described a playful interaction with a four-year-old boy named David. In the tweet, the singer jokingly referred to the child as having a crush on her and asked humorously whether she should “give him a chance.”

Following its circulation online, some users accused her of sexualising a minor, while others defended the post as a harmless joke taken out of context.

Singer Provides Context

In a detailed statement shared on her X page, Simi explained that she was 23 at the time and living at her mother’s daycare centre while working to build her music career. She said she often shared everyday experiences online, including light-hearted moments involving children.

According to her, the tweet was never rooted in perversion but reflected the playful nature of children.

She stated that kids can be affectionate and mischievous, and her posts at the time simply captured humorous moments from daily life.

Deletes Posts Amid Family Concerns

The singer also revealed that her team has begun deleting some old tweets due to the sensitivity of the situation for her family, although she initially did not want them removed.

She emphasised that she has consistently spoken out against rape and sexual violence and rejected narratives portraying her actions as immoral.

Ongoing Online Debate

The controversy continues to generate mixed reactions online, with opinions divided over intent, interpretation, and the impact of resurfacing old social media posts.
