Manchester United are moving quickly to appoint a new interim head coach following Darren Fletcher’s departure from the dugout, with Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now emerging as the leading candidates.
According to reports from Sky Sports News, both former United midfielders have held face-to-face meetings with club executives and presented their plans for the role. Further talks are expected as the club edges closer to making a final decision.
Sources indicate that Carrick impressed strongly during his discussions, though there is also recognition within Old Trafford of the goodwill and popularity Solskjaer built during his previous spell in charge.
United are keen to resolve the situation swiftly, with the Manchester derby this Saturday looming large. The club wants the new interim boss in place as soon as possible to allow time for preparation and tactical work ahead of the high-profile clash.
The urgency follows confirmation that Darren Fletcher’s short-term stint has officially ended, leaving the first team without a permanent figure in charge.
After United’s 2–1 FA Cup defeat to Brighton, Fletcher confirmed he would be returning to the Carrington Training Centre on Monday to discuss his next position within the club structure.
That loss added to an already difficult period for the Red Devils, who are now out of both domestic cup competitions, leaving the Premier League as their only remaining target for the rest of the season.
