Former Super Eagles midfielder Ogenyi Onazi has challenged Nigeria’s current squad to remain disciplined and fully committed as they pursue the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations title, insisting that a team of such quality must not leave the tournament empty-handed.

The 2013 AFCON winner believes this generation of players has a rare opportunity to make history and must not allow off-field issues or internal disagreements to derail their ambition.

According to Onazi, winning the continental title is not just about national pride but also a major career milestone for players at this level.

“This team has everything it takes to win AFCON,” he said. “With the talent in this squad, it would be very disappointing if they don’t lift the trophy. They need to stay focused and finish the job.”

His comments come after reports of a brief on-field exchange between Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Mozambique. Onazi played down the incident, stressing that such moments should not distract the team at a crucial stage of the competition.

He noted that Nigeria’s strong performances so far show the team is on the right path and urged the players to remain united.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has since confirmed that the issue was quickly resolved within the camp. Team Administrator Dayo Enebi dismissed any talk of crisis, stating that the matter was settled shortly after the match and that harmony has been restored.

Head Coach Eric Chelle also addressed the situation, emphasising discipline and togetherness as Nigeria prepares for their quarter-final showdown with Algeria in Marrakech.

“What happens on the pitch stays within the group,” Chelle said. “My responsibility is to keep everyone focused. We played well, but that was just one game. We must keep improving.”

Team captain Wilfred Ndidi described the incident as nothing more than competitive spirit, explaining that the players have already discussed it and moved on.

Nigeria have been impressive at the tournament, winning all four matches, scoring 12 goals, and yet to concede. They now face Algeria, who edged DR Congo in extra time, in Saturday’s quarter-final clash.

The Super Eagles are aiming for their fourth AFCON crown, having last won the title in 2013, and Onazi believes this squad has what it takes to go all the way.
