Funke Akindele has once again reminded Nollywood who sets the pace at the box office. Her latest release, Behind The Scenes, has opened to an explosive ₦200 million-plus debut, instantly becoming the biggest opening weekend of 2025 so far.
According to figures released by FilmOne Entertainment, the film is the first Nollywood title this year to cross the ₦200 million mark within its opening weekend. Beyond the headline number, Behind The Scenes also shattered five different opening-weekend records and recorded the highest cinema admissions of the year to date — a performance that places it firmly in blockbuster territory.
At the heart of the film is a story many Nigerians know all too well: the weight of family financial responsibility, often referred to as “black tax.” Starring Scarlet Gomez in the lead role, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Ibrahim Chatta, Mr Macaroni, Kamo State, Handi and Wanni Danbaki, with Akindele herself also making an appearance.
FilmOne celebrated the milestone on Instagram, hailing Akindele as the “Queen of the Box Office” and thanking audiences across the country for turning out in large numbers. The distributor also confirmed that the film remains in cinemas nationwide, with expectations that ticket sales will continue to rise in the coming weeks.
This success is the latest peak in Akindele’s remarkable run at the cinemas. Her previous release, Everybody Loves Jenifa, not only surpassed the opening record set by A Tribe Called Judah but went on to become Nollywood’s highest-grossing film ever, earning over ₦1.8 billion in Nigeria alone. That film crossed the ₦1 billion mark before the end of 2024 and continued drawing audiences into early 2025.
What makes Behind The Scenes particularly notable is its timing. At a moment when cinema attendance and pricing remain sensitive topics, a film rooted in everyday social realities has managed to pull massive crowds back into theatres. It’s a clear indication that when stories feel authentic and relatable, audiences still show up.
With this ₦200 million opening, Funke Akindele isn’t simply repeating past successes — she’s extending her legacy. Behind The Scenes stands as another statement of her dominance, reinforcing her status as Nollywood’s most dependable box-office powerhouse and proving that relevance, emotional truth, and strong storytelling still translate into commercial success.
As the film continues its theatrical run, one thing is already certain: this is not just the biggest opening weekend of 2025 so far — it’s another defining moment in a career that continues to reshape the limits of Nollywood box-office performance.
