Former Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has criticised Mohamed Salah over his recent outburst at Liverpool, warning that the forward is “destroying” the legacy he has built at Anfield.

Salah sparked controversy over the weekend after claiming he had been “thrown under the bus” by the club and hinting that his relationship with new manager Arne Slot had completely broken down.

Rooney, speaking on his podcast, said Slot must take firm action.

According to him, the Liverpool boss should leave Salah out of the squad for both the midweek Champions League clash against Inter Milan and the Premier League tie with Brighton.

“Slot has to show authority. What Salah said is unacceptable. If it were me, he wouldn’t even travel. Go to AFCON and let things cool down,” Rooney said.

A Growing Rift

Salah, 33, has not started Liverpool’s last three matches and was benched for the 3–3 draw against Leeds. After the game, he openly criticised the club, alleging that communication had broken down and that he was being made a scapegoat.

“It seems like the club wants me to take all the blame,” Salah complained.

The Egyptian signed a two-year deal in April but has struggled this season, scoring only four goals in 13 Premier League games—far from his usual standards.

Rooney: “He’s Throwing It All Away”

Rooney condemned Salah’s decision to go public, insisting the forward is undoing years of goodwill.

“He’s destroying his legacy at Liverpool. It’s sad to see. He’s handled this the wrong way,” Rooney said.

He also dismissed Salah’s claim that he shouldn’t have to “fight every day” to keep his place in the team:

“Time catches up with everybody. You earn your shirt every week. Saying you don’t have to fight for it is disrespectful—to the manager, the players, and the fans.”

Liverpool Under Pressure

Liverpool currently sit ninth in the Premier League, ten points behind league leaders Arsenal. With the team already struggling, Rooney believes Salah’s comments have added unnecessary drama.

“Liverpool need him now more than ever, and instead he’s thrown the club under the bus,” Rooney added.
