Super Eagles skipper William Troost-Ekong has officially called time on his international career, bringing an end to a decade-long run with the national team. His decision comes shortly after Nigeria’s failure to secure a spot at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following a playoff loss to DR Congo.
According to team sources, the 32-year-old defender’s exit is largely tied to contractual obligations at his Saudi Arabian club, Al Kholood. Ekong is reportedly required to hit a minimum number of appearances to earn a contract extension, and featuring at AFCON 2025 would have disrupted that target.
Insiders say the centre-back quietly made up his mind before the playoff but chose to make it public only after Nigeria’s elimination. He informed his teammates inside the dressing room and mentioned that he still plans to travel to Morocco during AFCON to support the team from the sidelines.
Troost-Ekong first wore the Super Eagles jersey in 2015 during an AFCON qualifier against Chad. Over the years, he formed the famous “Oyibo Wall” defensive partnership with Leon Balogun, becoming a key figure in Nigeria’s run to the 2018 World Cup.
One of the biggest highlights of his national career came at the 2023 AFCON in Côte d’Ivoire, where he was named the tournament’s MVP as Nigeria finished second.
Ekong’s retirement creates a leadership vacuum in defence, especially with 19-year-old Benjamin Fredrick — seen as his natural successor — ruled out of AFCON 2025 due to injury. The Super Eagles will now head to Morocco without two of their strongest defensive anchors.
The defender joined Al Kholood in 2024 from Greek champions PAOK and is under contract until mid-2026, with an option for an extra year. His international retirement is expected to help him meet his club’s performance targets and secure his long-term future.
With the Nigeria Football Federation set to unveil a provisional 55-man squad soon, Ekong’s absence is certain to spark discussion as AFCON 2025 approaches.
