Nigeria’s Super Eagles will clash with Gabon in the semi-finals of the African zone play-offs for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, following the conclusion of the qualification group stage on Tuesday.
The Eagles secured their place in the play-offs after thrashing Benin Republic 4–0 earlier in the day. Gabon, on the other hand, claimed the second spot in Group F after defeating Burundi 2–0, aided by Ivory Coast’s dominant win over Kenya.
Elsewhere, DR Congo earned their ticket with a narrow 1–0 win against Sudan to finish behind Senegal in Group B, while Cameroon also progressed after finishing second in Group D, trailing Cape Verde.
The play-offs, which will feature the top four runners-up from Africa’s nine qualifying groups, are slated to hold in Morocco between November 13 and 16.
According to FIFA’s upcoming rankings expected on October 23, Nigeria will likely remain the highest-ranked side among the four contenders and will therefore face the lowest-ranked team, Gabon. The second semi-final will see Cameroon square off against DR Congo.
Both matches will be played on November 13, with the winners meeting in a single-leg final three days later.
The eventual champion will advance to the inter-confederation play-offs in March 2026, where they will compete for a slot at the World Cup finals scheduled for Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
CAF has yet to announce the specific venue for the fixtures, but all matches will be single-leg eliminations. If scores are level after 90 minutes, extra time and, if necessary, penalties will determine the winner.
Morocco will host the mini-tournament, offering Africa a chance to gain an additional berth at the expanded 48-team global showpiece. Nine African nations have already qualified directly, while this play-off round will decide if the continent can send one more representative through the inter-continental route.
