Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have been knocked out of the ongoing FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile after suffering a heavy 4–0 defeat to Argentina in the Round of 16 clash at the Estadio Nacional, Santiago, on Wednesday.

The result ended Nigeria’s campaign in disappointing fashion, as the South Americans showcased their class and precision, scoring twice in each half to secure a comfortable passage into the quarter-finals.

Argentina got off to a dream start just two minutes in, when Alejo Sarco turned home Dylan Gorosito’s low cross, leaving goalkeeper Ebenezer Harcourt rooted to the spot. The early goal rattled the Flying Eagles, who struggled to regain composure amid relentless Argentine pressure.

Their dominance paid off again midway through the first half, as Maher Carrizo curled a brilliant free-kick into the bottom corner to double the lead, giving Nigeria a mountain to climb.

The Flying Eagles’ best opportunity of the half came when Daniel Daga unleashed a powerful volley after chesting down a loose ball, but Argentine goalkeeper Santino Barbi produced a stunning one-handed save to preserve the clean sheet.

Argentina maintained their tempo after the break and effectively killed off the game within ten minutes of the restart. A midfield error from Daga gifted possession to Milton Delgado, who quickly released Carrizo for his second of the night, slotting calmly beyond Harcourt to make it 3–0.

Nigeria’s defence was breached again in the 66th minute when Mateo Silvetti danced past Daniel Bameyi on the flank before curling a precise finish into the far corner, sealing a dominant performance for the South Americans.

Despite a series of substitutions by head coach Aliyu Zubairu, including Abduljelil Kamaldeen, Auwal Ibrahim, and Charles Agada, the Flying Eagles failed to find a spark in attack. Late efforts from Kparobo Arierhi and Haruna Aliyu went begging as Argentina comfortably saw out the contest.

Argentina’s superiority was reflected in the match statistics — more shots on target, superior passing accuracy, and near-total control of possession. Nigeria, meanwhile, were left frustrated, with Nasiru Salihu and Emmanuel Ekele receiving yellow cards amid growing indiscipline in the second half.

There was a brief moment of hope in the first period when Nigeria appealed for a handball in the box, but a VAR review confirmed no penalty.

While Daga and Tahir Maigana stood out for their effort and work rate, Nigeria’s lack of defensive organisation and attacking cohesion proved costly. The result also highlights the growing gulf between the Flying Eagles and the world’s top youth football nations — just two years after their memorable win over Argentina at the 2023 edition.

Argentina will now face Mexico in the quarter-finals, while Nigeria’s early exit once again delays their long-standing quest for a maiden U-20 World Cup title.
