Funso Doherty, former Lagos governorship candidate and PDP chieftain, believes the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) can be defeated in Lagos State come 2027, citing growing voter apathy, discontent, and mismanagement of resources.
On the PDP’s Readiness for 2027
Despite defections, Doherty insists the PDP remains united and Nigeria’s main opposition party.
The internal structures — NEC and NWC — are intact, and upcoming congresses and national convention signal a refocused direction.
He downplayed the influence of individuals like FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, arguing that unity in the party’s core matters more than personal alignments.
Lagos Governance: 26 Years, Minimal Progress
Doherty criticized the APC’s long-standing control of Lagos, claiming basic quality-of-life indicators remain poor despite huge budgets and revenues.
He believes resources have been poorly managed, benefiting a few instead of the broader population.
The N3 trillion Lagos budget, he says, has not translated to impactful development or inclusive governance.
Lessons from 2023 and Plan for 2027
After running under the ADC in 2023, Doherty moved to the PDP to merge his candidacy with a stronger, national platform.
He notes that low voter turnout is a key reason APC remains in control — with only about 1 in 6 registered voters participating.
He highlights that the APC even lost Lagos in the 2023 presidential election, proving the ruling party’s grip is weaker than perceived.
A New Vision for Lagos
Doherty promises a government based on:
Inclusive, not extractive governance, prioritizing the public interest over private gain.
Free education up to senior secondary school (academic and vocational).
Free healthcare for children and mothers.
Free transportation for schoolchildren and daily meals for students.
A focus on expanding public transport and technical training.
Doubling down on transparency to curb leakages and better utilise state resources.
On Tinubu’s Economic Reforms
While acknowledging the need for FX and subsidy reforms, he criticized the implementation for lacking coordination and adequate planning.
He argues that poorly executed reforms have worsened hardship and inflation.
He also points out the credibility gap — government officials calling for sacrifice while living extravagantly.
Sports and Youth Engagement
Doherty sees sports as a strategic tool to engage youth, reduce street crime, and foster talent.
Promises increased investment in sports both inside and outside school settings.
Vows to tackle the issue of out-of-school children, seeing education and sports as dual pillars of youth development.
