Tension has gripped residents of Lakowe and Sangotedo communities in Lagos following suspected cult clashes that reportedly claimed two lives over the weekend.
The first incident occurred on Saturday at Orita Adeba, near Lakowe Bus Stop, where a young man was hacked to death in what residents believe was a reprisal attack. Witnesses said the assailants, suspected to be members of the Aye confraternity, used machetes on the victim and cut off his right wrist before abandoning his body by the roadside.
A short video circulating online showed the victim, dressed in brown shorts and a white vest, lying in a pool of blood as onlookers gathered in shock.
One resident told PUNCH Metro:
“We can no longer sleep at night. For weeks now, these cult groups have been killing each other. The boy’s wrist was completely severed — it’s very disturbing.”
Just hours later, another body was discovered by a culvert in Sangotedo. The victim, dressed in a white singlet and black trousers, was found lying motionless by the roadside. While the motive was unclear, locals suspect it was also cult-related.
Fatai, another resident, expressed concern over the rising violence in Ibeju-Lekki:
“This is becoming too frequent. Only three days ago, someone else was butchered in Lakowe. It has now happened more than three times in a short period. They are just using their lives to settle scores.”
Last week, two people were also killed in a similar clash in the same axis, their bodies left with deep machete wounds.
The Lagos police are yet to issue an official statement on the latest killings, though a senior officer confirmed that details would be provided later.
