Four bids are in contention to host the 2029 UEFA Women’s European Championship after Italy withdrew on Friday, UEFA confirmed.

With Italy already set to co-host the men’s Euro 2032 alongside Turkey, the race is now between Germany, Poland, Portugal, and a joint Denmark-Sweden bid. UEFA will announce the winning host nation on December 3.

The chosen host will face high expectations following the success of the 2025 tournament in Switzerland, where England retained their title. Nearly all matches sold out, with a record 657,300 spectators in attendance.

Eight-time champions Germany are regarded as the frontrunners. The country recently staged Euro 2024 and previously bid to host the 2027 Women’s World Cup, which went instead to Brazil.

Under UEFA’s requirements, host nations must provide one stadium with at least 50,000 capacity and three venues with a minimum of 30,000 seats. Joint bids are allowed but limited to two neighbouring countries.

The tournament will maintain its 16-team format, unchanged since 2017, unlike FIFA’s Women’s World Cup which is expanding to 48 teams in 2031, expected to be co-hosted by the US and Mexico.
