The United Kingdom has commended the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Tinubu, describing them as tough but necessary measures to reposition Nigeria’s economy.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at the State House, Abuja, British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, said the reforms represent bold and courageous steps that are already creating new opportunities for trade and investment. He was accompanied by Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever and Political Counsellor Natalie Palmer.

Montgomery noted that despite the immediate challenges, the policy changes are vital for long-term stability and have already strengthened bilateral trade links between Nigeria and the UK. “These reforms and initiatives have laid the foundation for stronger trade partnerships between our two countries,” he said.

The envoy also commended the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), the First Lady’s flagship programme, for empowering women across key sectors, including education, health, and humanitarian services. He added that the UK was closely observing Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional review, particularly proposals aimed at increasing female representation in the National Assembly.

His remarks echo recent praise from World Trade Organisation (WTO) Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who lauded the reforms as critical to restoring stability while urging the government to accelerate growth measures and introduce social safety nets to cushion citizens from rising costs.

Responding, Senator Oluremi Tinubu assured the delegation of the government’s commitment to sustaining policies that uplift citizens. She emphasised that women’s empowerment, especially in the informal sector, remains central to the RHI.

“These are the people whose lives we are touching directly,” she said, adding that more efforts will also be channelled toward encouraging women’s political participation and ensuring they elect capable representatives.
