President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) and Chairman of NNPCL, Musa Kida, says the $100,000 gift to each D’Tigress player from President Bola Tinubu should be viewed as recognition for a decade of dominance in African women’s basketball, not just their latest win.

Speaking to M4S TV, Kida noted that the gesture was proportional to the team’s achievements, highlighting that the players have clinched the AfroBasket title five consecutive times.

“If you ask me as basketball president, I would say it’s $100,000 times five. If the reward for winning AfroBasket is $100,000 this time, we have done it five times — that should mean something,” Kida said.

Tinubu’s reward package, announced by Vice President Kashim Shettima during a reception at the Presidential Villa, also includes $50,000 for each technical crew member, a three-bedroom flat at the Renewed Hope Estate for all players and staff, and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON).

D’Tigress secured their fifth straight AfroBasket crown by defeating Mali 78–64 in the Abidjan final, cementing their position as Africa’s top women’s basketball team.

Kida praised the players for their dedication, attributing their continued success to the federation’s consistent monitoring, player development, and smooth squad transitions since he assumed office in 2017.

“We keep track of their club performances, run off-season training camps, and ensure they are always ready to compete. That’s why we keep winning,” he explained.

The team’s unbeaten streak of 29 games since 2015, Kida added, is clear proof of their status as “African queens.”

“No matter what happens, their dominance is undisputed,” he said.
