A street car race allegedly organised over a ₦30,000 wager ended in tragedy on Monday in the Ipara area of Remo, Ogun State, leaving five people dead.
According to community sources, the race involved suspected internet fraudsters who were competing for the cash prize. During the contest, one of the drivers reportedly lost control of his unregistered Lexus while speeding, veering off the road and crashing into a roadside shop. Two bystanders — identified as Akeem Ashiru and Shina Badejo — were killed instantly.
The driver and two passengers sustained severe injuries and were rushed to separate hospitals. However, Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency spokesperson, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed that the driver died on the spot while the passengers later died at the hospitals where they were receiving treatment.
Akinbiyi explained that the crash occurred around 1:40 p.m. near the Owolowo area of Ipara Remo when the vehicle, travelling at high speed towards Fidiwo, veered off course.
He urged motorists to avoid reckless driving, noting that excessive speed remains a major cause of fatal accidents in the state.
