The Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit has arrested 49 suspects in a coordinated early morning raid targeting criminal hideouts across Victoria Island, including Maroko Sandfill, Bonny Camp, and surrounding areas.

The operation, which commenced around 1:00 a.m. on Wednesday, was led by the agency’s Chairman, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Adetayo Akerele, and aimed to rid the city of criminal elements disturbing public peace.

Of the 49 suspects apprehended, 48 were men and one was a woman, all believed to be involved in various illegal activities such as pickpocketing, street thuggery, and operating unauthorized settlements.

Community Complaints Prompt Action

CSP Akerele stated that the raid was carried out in response to credible complaints and intelligence provided by local residents.

“Those who choose to undermine the peace and security of our communities must desist or be prepared to face the full weight of the law,” Akerele said.

He reaffirmed the agency’s resolve to sustain security and sanitation efforts across the state.

Legal Action and Continued Operations

According to Akerele, the 49 suspects have been charged to court in accordance with the relevant laws of Lagos State.

He added that the task force now conducts enforcement operations at least three times a week, focusing on dismantling illegal structures and rooting out crime hotspots.

“We will not relent in our efforts to ensure a safer and cleaner Lagos,” he emphasized.

The Lagos State Government has stepped up measures in recent months to address rising concerns about public safety and illegal urban encroachments, especially in high-traffic business districts like Victoria Island.
