FC Barcelona are now in pole position to sign Athletic Club’s winger, Nico Williams, as the club awaits a final decision from president Joan Laporta, according to reports.
The 22-year-old Spanish international has shown strong interest in a move to Camp Nou, reviving a transfer pursuit that had briefly gone cold.
Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reports that Barcelona have overtaken top European rivals such as Bayern Munich, Arsenal, and Chelsea in the race for the winger’s signature.
Williams’ current contract includes a release clause, considered affordable if the club can ensure compliance with LaLiga’s financial fair play rules.
While Laporta has expressed reservations about the financial feasibility of the move—particularly concerning LaLiga’s salary cap regulations—sporting director Deco has remained proactive in negotiations.
Sources confirm Deco recently met with Felix Tainta, Williams’ agent, as the club intensifies its efforts to secure the signing.
New Barça head coach Hansi Flick is said to be a strong supporter of the move. According to Football Espana, Flick has held direct phone conversations with Williams, outlining how the winger fits into his tactical plans.
Meanwhile, Lamine Yamal, Williams’ teammate in the Spain national team, is reportedly eager to link up with the winger at club level, adding further momentum behind the scenes.
As a result of the renewed focus on Williams, Barcelona have reportedly cooled their interest in Liverpool’s Luis Diaz, who is no longer considered a priority target.
The final hurdle remains Laporta’s approval. If the president gives the green light, insiders suggest the club is ready to activate the deal quickly, assuming all financial conditions align.
