Security was heightened on Monday at the Lagos State secretariat of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ogba, as the party officially unveiled its candidates for the upcoming July 12 local government elections across the state’s 20 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs).

The unveiling also marked the flag-off of the APC’s campaign for the highly anticipated grassroots elections. The party’s Publicity Secretary, Seye Oladejo, confirmed the development in a brief statement issued on Monday.

The event comes amid lingering tensions within the party following the controversial May 10 primaries, which sparked protests from several aggrieved members and aspirants. The disgruntled party faithful accused APC leaders of imposing candidates and sidelining other aspirants during the primaries.

In response, the APC leadership inaugurated a reconciliation committee in June to address internal grievances and foster unity ahead of the elections.

Police Presence and Leadership Appeals for Unity

A correspondent from The PUNCH observed the presence of security vans and armed police officers stationed at the entrance of the APC state secretariat, indicating efforts to maintain order during the event.

Amid the crisis, Princess Surah Animashaun, the APC chairmanship candidate for Epe LGA and incumbent council boss, appealed for unity among party members.

In a statement issued on Monday, Animashaun urged aggrieved aspirants and supporters to sheath their swords and rally behind the party’s candidates for a successful election outcome.

“It is normal for people to feel aggrieved in politics, but I can confirm that the primary held peacefully. No candidate was imposed or shortchanged,” she said.

She emphasized that the APC constitution allows both direct and indirect primaries, and that the Epe LGA primary was conducted through direct voting, with all aspirants present and delegates casting their votes openly.

Commitment to Grassroots Development

Speaking to journalists in Epe, Animashaun reiterated her commitment to grassroots development and inclusive governance, especially for women and youth.

“I know my people, I know their problems, and I know how to address them. Before executing any project, I’ll consult the people and ensure they’re part of the decision-making process,” she said.

She promised that her administration, if re-elected, would prioritize the welfare of residents, noting that effective leadership must begin with understanding the people’s needs.

“I am a grassroots person. With the support of our leaders and stakeholders, I am confident we’ll do the right things for our people,” she added.
