Lagos, Nigeria
– Ports & Cargo Handling Services Limited, a subsidiary of SIFAX Group, has marked a historic milestone with the successful docking of IPSARION — the largest general cargo vessel ever handled at its terminal on Tincan Island Port, Lagos.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the Group Head of Corporate Communications at SIFAX Group, Olumuyiwa Akande, confirmed the development, describing it as a major achievement for the company and Nigeria’s maritime industry.

The IPSARION is a Malta-flagged bulk carrier, measuring 199.99 meters in length with a gross tonnage of 36,560. It arrived at the terminal carrying a diverse range of cargo, including industrial machinery, construction equipment, steel rods, vehicles, chemicals, and power generation machinery from Europe.

Built by Tsuneishi Heavy Industries in Cebu, Philippines, the vessel is managed by Helikon Shipping Enterprises Ltd and operated by Yake Bulk Limited.

Strategic Shift Toward General Cargo

John Jenkins, Managing Director of Ports & Cargo Handling Services Limited, said the arrival of the vessel is part of a broader strategic shift to diversify terminal operations.

“For a long time, our terminal primarily serviced container vessels. However, recent strategic decisions have opened up opportunities for general cargo handling, and IPSARION is a testament to that shift,” Jenkins said.

He emphasized that although general cargo is not new to the terminal, the scale of the IPSARION operation demonstrates the terminal’s readiness for large-volume, non-containerized shipments.

“Our terminal is well-equipped with the necessary infrastructure, technical know-how, and trained personnel to efficiently handle vessels of this magnitude,” Jenkins added.

Unloading operations for IPSARION are currently underway, with Jenkins noting that this achievement highlights the significant investment SIFAX Group has made over the years in port infrastructure and human capital.

Economic Impact

The MD reiterated that the milestone strengthens SIFAX Group’s position as a leader in the Nigerian maritime sector and underscores its commitment to facilitating trade and supporting national economic growth.

“Handling a vessel of this scale not only validates our operational capability but also reinforces our role in advancing maritime excellence and boosting the Nigerian economy,” Jenkins said.
