Nigerian singer May D is revisiting the heights of his career and making bold claims about his past success. In a recent appearance on the Honest Bunch Podcast, May D reflected on his journey, revealing that at one point, he was bigger than both Wizkid and Davido, two of the biggest stars in Afrobeats today.
According to May D, back in 2011, his hit single “Soundtrack” was a major force in the Nigerian music scene—so much so that he believes it surpassed Wizkid’s “Holla At Your Boy,” which was also a chart-topping anthem at the time. “Back then, it was Wiz, David, and I. I even like was bigger,” May D said confidently, emphasizing that his single “Soundtrack” outshone “Holla At Your Boy” in popularity.
The singer also touched on his past relationship with both Davido and P-Square. He recalled how, at one point, he even tried to help Davido when his father banned him from pursuing music. May D offered to house him, but Davido couldn’t stay with him due to the less-than-ideal living conditions at the time, as May D was staying in P-Square’s boys’ quarters.
Speaking about P-Square, May D shared that he met the legendary duo in 2008, and they worked together on several tracks, including “Chop My Money” and “Do As I Do” featuring Tiwa Savage. Despite their early collaboration, P-Square didn’t attempt to sign May D until 2011, after he was featured on “Chop My Money.”
May D also previously made headlines on X (formerly Twitter), claiming that he would have been bigger than Wizkid if not for his fallout with P-Square. Clarifying that post, May D explained that he was reacting to online bullying from Wizkid’s fans. He also revealed that after meeting Akon in the U.S. for a video shoot, he presented offers from Akon to P-Square, who then made him a contract offer. However, things took a turn when May D asked for clarification on issues like past contributions to their songs and his accommodation. This disagreement led to him leaving the P-Square mansion, and he later went on to establish his own label, Confam Records.
Despite the setbacks and challenges, May D speaks highly of P-Square, calling them amazing people, and he continues to speak fondly of his past music career. With hit tracks like “Ile Ijo” and “Gat Me High,” May D’s influence still resonates with his fans.
Looking ahead, May D has hinted at new music in 2025, so fans can expect to hear more from the talented artist as he continues to make his mark in the industry.
