Victor Osimhen headlines a group of Nigerian footballers facing decisive fixtures as the UEFA Champions League group phase reaches its conclusion on Wednesday.

The Galatasaray striker and reigning African Player of the Year is under pressure as the Turkish champions battle to keep their European campaign alive. Galatasaray head into their final group match knowing they must avoid a heavy defeat to remain in contention for a play-off spot — a daunting task away at Manchester City, who themselves need victory to secure a top-eight finish.

Galatasaray currently sit 17th in the standings with 10 points from seven matches, a position that falls short of the ambitions earlier outlined by Osimhen, who had urged his side to “make a statement in the most prestigious games.”

Despite the challenge, the 27-year-old remains confident ahead of the clash at the Etihad Stadium.

“Manchester City is one of the best teams in the world,” Osimhen said. “We’re going to play our game. We’ll focus on the league first, then we’ll focus on that match. It won’t be easy, but I trust my team. If we play like we did against Atlético, we can get something.”

Osimhen has been one of Galatasaray’s bright spots in Europe, scoring six goals in five Champions League appearances this season, though the club’s fate still hangs in the balance.

Lookman Targets Top-Eight Finish

Atalanta winger Ademola Lookman is also involved in a tense final round. The Italian side sit on 13 points with a slim +1 goal difference, placing them just inside the qualification picture. However, last week’s 3–2 home defeat to Athletic Bilbao dented their hopes, leaving them needing a win away at Union Saint-Gilloise to boost their chances of finishing in the top eight.

Union Saint-Gilloise are themselves fighting for survival, meaning Atalanta could still drop into the play-off positions with a loss.

Lookman, who returned from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in strong form, has featured in six Champions League matches this season, contributing one goal and two assists.

Tella, Onyedika, Others Face Tight Margins

Nathan Tella and Bayer Leverkusen are currently 20th with nine points and remain in contention for a play-off place. However, their poor goal difference means a draw against Villarreal may not be enough to guarantee qualification.

Midfielder Raphael Onyedika and Club Brugge sit 27th with seven points and must win their final match against Marseille to keep their hopes of a top-24 finish alive. Even then, they would still rely on favourable results elsewhere. Onyedika has been a regular for the Belgian side, registering one goal and one assist in the competition.

At Olympiacos, Bruno Onyemaechi will hope to feature as the Greek club look to secure a play-off spot. Olympiacos occupy the final qualifying position with eight points and need at least a draw away at Ajax, though goal difference and other results could still prove decisive.

Ilenikhena Chasing History with Monaco

Teenage striker George Ilenikhena faces a crucial test with Monaco, who sit 21st with nine points. Like Leverkusen, the French side’s poor goal difference means they must beat Juventus at home to ensure progression.

Ilenikhena recently made history by surpassing Kanu Nwankwo as the youngest African player to reach 15 Champions League appearances. The 19-year-old achieved the milestone at 19 years and 157 days during a brief appearance in Monaco’s 6–1 defeat to Real Madrid. Kanu had previously set the record at 19 years and 260 days in 1996.

With qualification hopes hanging by a thread, Wednesday’s fixtures promise high drama for Nigeria’s representatives across Europe.
