Nigeria’s journey at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations came to a heartbreaking end on Wednesday night after the Super Eagles lost 4–2 on penalties to host nation Morocco in the semi-finals.

The tense encounter finished goalless after extra time, but missed spot-kicks from Samuel Chukwueze and Bruno Onyemaechi handed Morocco the advantage in the shootout. Goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali managed to save one attempt, but it was not enough to keep Nigeria in the tournament.

Earlier in the day, Senegal sealed their place in the final with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Egypt in Tangier. The defending champions took the lead through Sadio Mané, Egypt responded, but a late Senegalese strike ended Mohamed Salah’s hopes of lifting another AFCON title.

With the results, Morocco and Senegal will now clash in the AFCON 2025 final on Sunday at 9:00 pm. Nigeria and Egypt, meanwhile, will battle for third place on Saturday at 6:00 pm.

Despite arriving in the competition as one of the highest-scoring teams, Nigeria struggled to create clear chances against Morocco, who dominated possession and controlled large portions of the match. The hosts also enjoyed strong backing from the home crowd and remained solid at the back throughout.

Senegal, on the other hand, head into the final full of confidence, carrying the momentum of their title defence and knockout-stage experience.

Both the final and the third-place playoff will be shown live on SuperSport via DStv and GOtv, with open access available to selected subscribers on the AFCON dedicated channels.

As the tournament draws to a close, all eyes will be on whether Morocco can lift the trophy on home soil or if Senegal can defend their crown, while Nigeria and Egypt look to end their campaigns on a positive note.
