Funke Akindele’s Behind The Scenes is no longer just a hit movie — it is now a landmark moment in African cinema. In under one month, the film has officially crossed the ₦2 billion mark at the box office, setting a new all-time record for Nollywood and the continent.
According to figures confirmed by FilmOne Entertainment, the film has generated over ₦2.1 billion in ticket sales, making it the highest-grossing Nollywood movie ever. The company described the achievement as a historic breakthrough that has “shattered every existing record.”
What makes this feat even more remarkable is the pace. Behind The Scenes became the fastest film in West Africa to reach ₦1 billion, racing past milestones that once took months for movies to achieve. It didn’t slow down at ₦1.7 billion — it surged straight through to ₦2 billion.
Beyond Nigeria, the film has also made waves internationally. FilmOne revealed that Behind The Scenes is now the highest-grossing Nollywood release in the United Kingdom and Ireland. For a Nigerian film to dominate diaspora cinemas at this level is rare, and it signals growing global appetite for African stories.
Audiences abroad didn’t just show up — they brought others along, turning the film into a shared experience across communities.
At the heart of the movie’s success is its subject matter. Behind The Scenes explores the emotional weight of black tax — the pressure many young Africans face to support family while trying to survive themselves. It captures the exhaustion, the guilt, the love, and the silent struggle without exaggeration.
Instead of preaching, the film mirrors real life. That honesty has fueled strong word-of-mouth, emotional reactions online, and repeat cinema visits.
With this milestone, Funke Akindele has further cemented her position as Africa’s most commercially successful filmmaker. Not just as an actress, but as a writer, director, and producer, she continues to dominate the box office.
Remarkably, this is the third consecutive year she has topped the African box office — a record no other filmmaker has achieved. Previous hits like Everybody Loves Jenifa and A Tribe Called Judah already placed her at the top. Behind The Scenes has now pushed her into an entirely new league.
FilmOne described the film’s journey as more than financial success, calling it a cultural movement driven by audience loyalty and emotional connection.
Reacting on Instagram, Akindele remained humble and reflective, crediting God and her commitment to storytelling.
She wrote that records are milestones, not the mission, and that her focus remains on serving the story, respecting the audience, and refining her craft.
Behind The Scenes is not just breaking records — it is changing the conversation about what Nollywood can achieve. And judging by its momentum, the story may still be unfolding.
