The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has moved to calm growing concerns over match officiating ahead of the Super Eagles’ AFCON 2025 semi-final clash with host nation Morocco.
The concerns followed the Confederation of African Football’s appointment of Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea as the centre official, with South African Abongile Tom assigned to oversee VAR duties for Wednesday’s encounter in Rabat. The decision triggered unease among some Nigerian supporters, largely due to longstanding football rivalries with both countries.
Reacting to the development, NFF president Ibrahim Gusau dismissed fears of possible bias, urging fans to remain calm. He maintained that there was no reason to doubt the integrity of the officials selected for the match.
“I do not share the fears that some people have about the officials being biased,” Gusau said. “I believe the playing field is level, and the pitch is fair for both teams.”
The Super Eagles will face Morocco with a place in the AFCON final at stake, as Nigeria continues its push for continental glory.
