Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has come under heavy criticism from Nigerian fans following his heated exchange with teammate Ademola Lookman during Nigeria’s 4–0 win over Mozambique in the round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
The incident occurred in the 63rd minute when Lookman failed to square a chance to Osimhen, who was well positioned in the box. Television footage showed Osimhen angrily confronting the Atalanta forward, pointing at him and shouting in frustration, even after captain Wilfred Ndidi tried to calm the situation. The striker was later heard saying in pidgin, “No try am again.”
Ironically, Lookman had already been instrumental in the match, creating two clear chances for Osimhen earlier, including one that led directly to a goal. Despite the team’s commanding performance, the altercation overshadowed the moment.
Shortly after the outburst, Osimhen requested to be substituted and was booed by sections of the crowd as Moses Simon replaced him.
The episode sparked widespread backlash on social media, with many fans questioning Osimhen’s temperament and attitude, especially given the team’s dominance and Lookman’s strong contribution. Several commentators described his behaviour as unnecessary, unprofessional, and disruptive.
Despite the controversy, Osimhen ended the game with two goals, while Lookman recorded two assists and a goal of his own as Nigeria secured their fourth straight win of the tournament to book a place in the quarter-finals.
The Super Eagles will now face either Algeria or DR Congo as they continue their push for a first AFCON title since 2013.
