Nigerian rising star Chella has pulled off one of the biggest surprise wins of the year, as his breakout hit My Darling secured a spot on TikTok’s Global Songs of 2025 list making it the only Nigerian song to appear on the chart.
Released in March, the track didn’t rely on hype or heavy marketing. Instead, it spread the old-fashioned way: real people genuinely loved it. The song quietly caught fire on TikTok, where millions of users used it in dance clips, skits, and lyric-driven videos, eventually pushing it into global territory.
The 2025 year-end list is filled with global superstars, yet Chella still broke through, landing at number 19.
The chart is topped by a surprise comeback Connie Francis’ Pretty Little Baby, which went viral again this year. Other big names on the list include Billie Eilish, Gracie Abrams, and Lady Gaga & Bruno Mars with their smash record Die With A Smile. Doechii’s Anxiety also appeared with a special nod as TikTok’s Music Trend of the Year.
For Chella to sit among these heavyweights isn’t just a win for him—it’s a moment for Afrobeats and emerging artists everywhere.
The secret is in the sound.
My Darling leans into the simplicity and catchiness that define some of Afrobeats’ biggest global records. The melody is smooth, the lyrics are easy to repeat, and the production grabs you instantly. It hooks you before you even realize it.
That stickiness made it irresistible on TikTok. Once users discovered it, the momentum became unstoppable. People danced to it, acted out the lyrics, shot POV videos, and remixed it endlessly.
No gimmicks just pure connection.
The TikTok wave didn’t stay on TikTok.
The song skyrocketed on streaming platforms:
Most-streamed Nigerian song on YouTube Music in 2025, crossing 100 million streams.
Over 61 million streams on Spotify by November.
Hit #1 on the Global Shazam Chart, a rare milestone shared only by Afrobeats giants like Wizkid and CKay.
For an artist still carving his lane, this is monumental.
Chella’s achievement is another reminder that the music industry has changed. Social media doesn’t just influence trends anymore—it creates global hits. With one catchy track and a wave of user-generated content, an underdog can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the world’s biggest stars.
And in 2025, Chella did exactly that.
