In a surprising move just weeks before AFCON 2025 in Morocco, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong has called time on his international career.
Although his name appeared in Nigeria’s 54-man provisional squad, the 32-year-old has chosen to step aside after earning 83 caps for the country.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano confirmed the news, noting that Ekong is bowing out after nearly a decade at the centre of Nigeria’s defence — with three medals and appearances in five major tournaments.
Troost-Ekong made his debut in 2015 and grew into one of the team’s most dependable leaders. His exit marks the end of an era for the Super Eagles.
