Segun Awolowo, grandson of the late statesman Chief Obafemi Awolowo and former Executive Director of the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, has passed away at the age of 62.

The Awolowo family confirmed his death on Thursday, describing him as an exceptional husband, father, and grandfather whose steadiness, compassion, and leadership anchored the family. In their tribute, they praised his lifelong dedication to public service, saying he served Nigeria with integrity, vision, and unwavering commitment.

“We are devastated by his passing but grateful for the impact of his life and the love he shared with us,” the family said.

National Reactions

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid tribute to the late Awolowo, calling his death a painful blow not only to the Awolowo family but to the nation. In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President said Segun upheld the values of the Awolowo legacy through his character and devotion to justice.

Tinubu highlighted his record-setting tenure as the longest-serving Executive Director of the NEPC, where he served from 2013 to 2021, and praised his contributions to national development.

The President extended condolences to his wife, children, mother, Sisi Abah Folawiyo, and the people of Ogun State and the South-West.

Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, also mourned the loss, describing Awolowo as intelligent, humble, and courageous. In a statement by his aide Kayode Akinmade, the governor said the news came as a shock and noted that Awolowo left a lasting mark through his work and character.

Life & Career

Born two months after his father’s passing, Segun Awolowo went on to build a distinguished career in law and public administration. He studied Law and was called to the Bar in 1989, practising with the chambers of Abayomi Sogbesan & Co. and GOK Ajayi & Co.

He later served in various capacities in government, including Special Assistant on Traditional Institutions and Legal Matters during President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration. He also held top-level roles between 2007 and 2011 in Social Development and Transport.

His most prominent role came in 2013 when he was appointed Executive Director of the NEPC, where he served for eight years. In 2021, he was elected President of the National Trade Promotion Organisations for ECOWAS member states.

Segun Awolowo is remembered as a dedicated public servant, a bridge-builder, and a gentleman whose legacy will continue to inspire many.
