UNICEF has called on the Federal Government to act swiftly and secure the release of the 25 schoolgirls abducted during Monday’s attack on a Government Girls School in Maga, Danko-Wasagu LGA of Kebbi State — an incident that also claimed the life of the school’s vice-principal.

The organisation made the call on Tuesday following renewed concerns over the rising wave of school attacks in Nigeria’s Northwest.

In a statement signed by Sussan Akila, UNICEF Nigeria’s Communication Specialist, the agency condemned the attack, describing it as a painful reminder of the urgent need to protect schools and learning environments.

Akila said:
“UNICEF strongly condemns the reported attack… which resulted in the death of the Vice-Principal and the abduction of 25 students. This tragic incident is yet another stark reminder of the urgent need to protect children, schools, and the personnel they rely upon to learn safely.”

She expressed condolence to the affected families and community, adding that UNICEF stands in solidarity with them during this difficult period and wishes the injured a quick recovery.

On the abduction, she stressed:
“UNICEF further urges the swift release of the abducted children.”

The statement also highlighted the legal and moral responsibility to safeguard education spaces, noting that schools, students, and staff are protected under international law. Akila insisted that those behind attacks on learning institutions must be held accountable.

Referencing Nigeria’s endorsement of the 2015 Safe Schools Declaration, she reminded the government of its commitment to take concrete steps to protect schools, especially in conflict-prone areas.

UNICEF said it is working with authorities and communities to strengthen safety systems and prevent similar tragedies, adding:
“No child should be put at risk while pursuing an education.”

The Safe Schools Declaration — endorsed by 121 countries, including Nigeria — is an international commitment to shield students, teachers, and learning facilities from the impacts of armed conflict.
