The Senate was plunged into grief on Wednesday following the passing of Senator Okey Ezea, the lawmaker representing Enugu North Senatorial District, who reportedly died in the United Kingdom while undergoing medical care.

Ezea, elected under the Labour Party banner, was the lone LP senator from Enugu State in the 10th National Assembly.

His death makes him the second serving senator from the South-East to pass away in under two years, coming after Senator Ifeanyi Ubah of Anambra State, who died in London in July 2024 at age 52.

As news of the tragedy filtered into the National Assembly, senators paid emotional tributes, describing Ezea as a disciplined, humble, and deeply spiritual colleague whose absence will be profoundly felt in the chamber.

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu (Abia North) said he received the news “with profound shock and deep sorrow,” calling Ezea “my dear brother and colleague.”

He continued, “His death is a painful blow. Senator Ezea was not just a fellow legislator  he was a friend. Our bond was built on mutual respect, brotherhood, and sincere affection.”
Kalu also reflected on their shared Catholic faith and extended condolences to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Governor Peter Mbah, the people of Enugu State, the Nsukka zone, and the deceased senator’s family.

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan (Kogi Central) also expressed her heartbreak, describing Ezea as a soft-spoken, wise, and supportive colleague.

“You were a good man,  wise and gentle. Your prayers carried me through some of my darkest moments. I will miss you in the chambers,” she wrote.
She added that Kogi Central joins Enugu North in mourning a “distinguished son.”

The Senate is expected to officially acknowledge his death at plenary, with lawmakers likely to observe a minute of silence in line with parliamentary tradition.
