The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on political parties in Osun State to ensure their governorship primaries are conducted legally and transparently ahead of the 2026 election.

Dr. Mutiu Agboke, the Osun Resident Electoral Commissioner, made the appeal in a statement released on Monday in Osogbo by the commission’s Public Relations Officer, Olurode Musa.

INEC has scheduled the Osun governorship election for August 8, 2026.

Agboke urged all registered parties to strictly follow the Electoral Act 2022 as well as INEC’s guidelines when selecting their candidates, noting that failure to do so often results in avoidable pre-election court cases.

“The commission emphasises the need for free, fair and peaceful primary elections that truly reflect the will of party members,” he said. “Many pre-election litigations arise from poorly conducted primaries, and these issues can be prevented if parties follow the laid-down procedures.”

He stressed that all aspirants must be given equal opportunities to contest, adding that internal democracy remains key to credible elections.

According to INEC’s timetable, political parties are expected to hold their primaries between November 24 and December 15, 2025.

Agboke assured parties that the commission is ready to provide guidance and support to ensure the process is conducted properly. He also called on security agencies and other stakeholders to work with INEC to maintain peace throughout the exercise.

He noted that the commission will continue to monitor party activities and take necessary action—within the law—against any party that violates electoral rules.
