The Super Eagles of Nigeria are set to lock horns with the Panthers of Gabon today, November 13, in Rabat, Morocco, in a decisive CAF playoff showdown that will determine who advances to the 2026 FIFA World Cup inter-confederation playoff.

Nigeria sealed their playoff spot as one of the top runners-up in the African qualifiers, thanks to a commanding 4–0 win over Benin Republic, highlighted by a Victor Osimhen hat-trick. Gabon, meanwhile, finished second in Group F behind Ivory Coast, securing their place after a strong finish to their campaign.

The winner of Thursday’s clash will progress to face either Cameroon or the Democratic Republic of Congo on November 16, with the victor of that final earning a ticket to the intercontinental playoff — and a potential spot at the 2026 World Cup.

Recent Form and Head-to-Head

Nigeria and Gabon have a rivalry that stretches back more than 60 years. Of their nine previous meetings, Nigeria have won five, drawn three, and lost just once — a 2-1 defeat in June 1989, a result that ultimately cost them qualification for the Italia ’90 World Cup.

The Super Eagles head into this match unbeaten in their last four qualifiers, buoyed by a confident and cohesive squad. They also hold a psychological edge, having won three and drawn one of their last four encounters against Gabon.

Gabon, under coach Thierry Mouyouma, have impressed with their attacking play — scoring 22 goals in 10 qualifiers — but their record against Africa’s top-ranked sides remains shaky, with four defeats and one draw since Mouyouma took charge.

Key Players to Watch

Victor Osimhen (Nigeria) – The Galatasaray striker is the focal point of Nigeria’s attack and remains one of Africa’s most lethal forwards. With 29 goals in 43 appearances, he is just eight shy of matching Rashidi Yekini’s all-time record for the Super Eagles. His explosive pace, intelligent movement, and sharp finishing will be vital in breaking down Gabon’s defense.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Gabon) – At 36, the Olympique de Marseille forward continues to prove his class. His four-goal haul in Gabon’s thrilling 4-3 win over Gambia kept their World Cup dream alive. Aubameyang’s experience, leadership, and eye for goal make him the key threat Nigeria must contain in Rabat.
