Nigerian striker Victor Boniface has admitted that his goal return for the Super Eagles has fallen short of expectations but says his passion and commitment to representing the country remain unwavering.
Speaking with sports journalist Oma Akatugba, the 24-year-old Bayer Leverkusen forward said he feels proud every time he wears the national team jersey, even though his performances have drawn mixed reactions from fans.
“I’ve been unlucky with the national team in terms of scoring goals,” Boniface said. “There were a few games where I didn’t play well, but that doesn’t mean I’m a bad player. My biggest dream as a footballer was to represent my country, and I’m grateful that I achieved it.”
The forward, who missed part of last season through injury, also spoke about his club career and the transfer rumours that linked him with AC Milan during the last window.
“When the Milan deal didn’t happen, I was just relaxing with my friends. Things like that are normal in football,” he said. “I love Germany. I really do.”
Boniface dismissed claims that his last campaign was disappointing, highlighting his resilience despite setbacks.
“I missed a lot of games but still scored eight goals. I don’t understand how that became a bad season,” he added.
Addressing criticism of his social media activity, Boniface said his online posts are often misinterpreted.
“I just post funny things. If people make it a big deal, that’s their choice. When I stopped posting, they said I must be going through something. When I post, they still complain,” he said with a laugh.
He added that his life in Germany extends beyond football, praising the support from fans and the welcoming atmosphere.
“We have a good connection here. It feels like home,” he noted.
Boniface, who is currently on loan at Werder Bremen from Bayer Leverkusen for the 2025/26 season, reaffirmed his desire to stay in the Bundesliga and continue improving.
“I had offers from other countries, even from England, but I chose to stay in Germany. I love it here, and I want to make the fans proud,” he concluded.
