Liverpool manager Arne Slot has called for patience as record signing Alexander Isak prepares to return to training ahead of this weekend’s Premier League clash against Manchester City.
The Swedish striker, who joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in September for a British-record £125 million ($164 million), has been sidelined for three weeks with a groin injury sustained during the Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt last month.
“He will train for the first time today with the team again after being three weeks out,” Slot told reporters on Friday. “But if you’ve only been doing rehab for three weeks, you can’t expect to be back at the same level you were before.”
The 26-year-old has played just eight matches since arriving at Anfield and is yet to find the net in the Premier League. Slot emphasized that match fitness will take time, despite Isak’s progress in recovery.
“You can’t compare rehab sessions with real matches or full team training,” Slot said. “As much as we try to replicate that intensity, it’s simply not possible. So, again, I have to say — give him some time.”
The Dutch manager also confirmed that goalkeeper Alisson Becker is expected to return after the upcoming international break.
Liverpool, who recently ended a four-match league losing streak with a win against Aston Villa, followed up with a statement victory over Real Madrid in the Champions League.
With Arsenal currently six points clear at the top and Manchester City in second place, Slot dismissed suggestions that Sunday’s game is a must-win, instead stressing the importance of steady progress.
“Our focus is on being consistent and improving,” he said. “We’ve won two straight games, and now it’s about building momentum and getting players fit again.”
Looking ahead to the clash at the Etihad, Slot praised Pep Guardiola’s style of play and the challenge his teams present.
“What I like about Pep Guardiola’s teams is that you always know what to expect — a great game of football with no time-wasting or theatrics,” Slot noted. “That’s what football should be about.”
