Former Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has called on Chelsea’s senior players to question manager Enzo Maresca’s frequent squad rotations, warning that the lack of consistency could affect team chemistry.

Maresca made seven changes to his starting XI in Wednesday’s 2-2 Champions League draw against Qarabag, marking the fifth consecutive match in which he has rotated his side by at least seven players across all competitions.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former England forward said players need stability to build understanding on the pitch.

“The players want to play and build relationships,” Rooney said. “When you keep chopping and changing, the players won’t be happy — and that could come back to bite them.”

Rooney added that while rotation is acceptable when results are positive, it becomes a concern when performances dip.

“If they’re not winning, then questions have to be asked,” he stressed.

‘Leadership Group Should Speak Up’ — Rooney

Rooney urged Chelsea captain Reece James and other senior members of the squad to raise the issue with Maresca directly, saying modern teams often rely on leadership groups to bridge communication between players and coaches.

“Most clubs now have a leadership group, and as a group, you have to go and question the manager,” he explained. “This isn’t about player power — it’s about communication. If I were in that group, I’d be saying, ‘Look, I’m not happy with this.’”

Maresca Defends Rotation Policy

Chelsea have made 85 changes in 16 matches this season — the highest in the Premier League.
However, Maresca defended his approach, insisting the constant adjustments are part of a long-term plan to manage fatigue and maintain competitiveness.

“Our selections are based on what we believe is right for each game,” the Chelsea boss said after the Qarabag draw.
“Players like Moisés [Caicedo], Enzo [Fernández], and Malo [Gusto] can’t play every three days. The Club World Cup schedule affected us a lot, so we rotate to stay fresh. When we win, no one talks about it; when we don’t, everyone questions it.”
