Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has responded to Wayne Rooney’s recent comments suggesting that the Reds’ poor run of form stems from weak leadership, calling the criticism “lazy.”

The Dutch defender spoke after Liverpool ended a four-game losing streak with a victory over Aston Villa on Saturday, reclaiming some momentum in the Premier League title race.

Liverpool began the 2025/26 season in strong form, winning their first five matches under Arne Slot, but a string of defeats had sparked questions about the team’s mentality and leadership.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Rooney had claimed that Van Dijk and Mohamed Salah “haven’t really led that team this season,” describing their body language as “a big concern.”

Van Dijk Responds Calmly

Addressing Rooney’s comments, Van Dijk said he respects the former Manchester United striker but disagrees with his assessment.

“I didn’t hear him last year,” the Liverpool skipper said. “It doesn’t hurt me, but I think that comment is a bit of a lazy criticism.

“It’s easy to blame players, but he knows we’re all in it together — trying to help each other get out of a rough spell. Last season, when things were going well, you didn’t hear that kind of talk.”

Van Dijk added that he doesn’t take the remarks personally and understands that pundits have a job to do.

“He’s a legend of the game, and I can only say positive things about him. But we focus on ourselves and keep working hard.”

Backs Manager Arne Slot

The Dutch defender also threw his support behind manager Arne Slot, who has faced questions about his future following the club’s recent dip in form.

“I’ve heard talk about the manager being under pressure, but we’re not a club that makes rash decisions,” Van Dijk said. “We believe in what we’re building. As long as we stay humble and keep working, we can turn it around together.”

Liverpool’s weekend win over Aston Villa has eased some of the tension at Anfield, with fans hoping the team can rediscover the consistency that delivered them the league title last season.
