Several people have been reported trapped after a two-storey building collapsed early Monday morning in the Oyingbo area of Lagos.

The incident occurred at 54 Cole Street, near Cemetery Bus Stop, around 12:20 a.m., according to a situation report by Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service.

Adeseye confirmed that the Sari-Iganmu Fire Station team was immediately dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call. The structure, which had reportedly been marked as distressed, collapsed while residents were still inside.

β€œIt is an ongoing rescue involving an existing two-storey building which has reportedly been marked in distress before collapsing on the occupants,” the agency said.

So far, 15 persons β€” including seven men, four women, and four children β€” have been rescued with varying degrees of injury. They were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute-Metta, and the General Hospital, Odan.

Rescue operations are still ongoing as emergency teams continue to search for trapped victims.

Building collapses remain a recurring tragedy in Lagos, often blamed on poor regulation, substandard materials, and weak enforcement of safety codes.

Notably, in November 2021, a high-rise building in Ikoyi collapsed during construction, killing at least 42 people, while another four-storey building in Yaba went down in September 2025, leaving several casualties.
