Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has warned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) risks disintegration if its governors continue to exclude him from major party consultations and decision-making.
Speaking at a media briefing in Abuja on Friday, the former Rivers State governor expressed frustration over being sidelined despite his long-standing contributions to the party’s growth and survival.
“Have I not said it before now that the booby trap you are setting will consume you? The way these present governors are going, they will bury this party,” Wike declared.
The minister questioned why his current position as a federal minister should disqualify him from participating in PDP deliberations.
“I am the FCT Minister. Are you saying that because I’m not a governor, you can hold a PDP stakeholders’ meeting without me and still expect the party to survive?” he asked.
Wike argued that even if he were not a minister, his influence and past role within the party should merit inclusion in major consultations.
“By the role I’ve played in this party, is it right to say I cannot be consulted on key issues? Certainly not,” he said.
The minister also dismissed claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was behind the PDP’s internal crises, insisting that the opposition party’s challenges were self-inflicted.
“All these talks about APC are rubbish. Is it the APC that makes you take wrong decisions? Two or three people, because they’re governors and receive large allocations, will go and decide for everyone — and you expect me to follow? Follow who?” he queried.
On the party’s forthcoming national convention, Wike accused the PDP leadership of neglecting to complete the required congresses and internal processes, which he said were delaying progress.
“If they had done the right thing, would anyone stall the convention? They haven’t completed the necessary congresses and other steps,” he added.
The PDP has been battling deepening internal rifts and a spate of defections involving key figures such as Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, and Akwa Ibom Governor Umo Eno. The party also faces multiple legal disputes over preparations for its national convention.
