Ademola Lookman’s summer transfer saga may have ended, but questions still surround his long-term future at Atalanta, despite his promising return to the starting lineup.
The Nigerian forward, whose contract runs until June 2027, was heavily linked with a move away from Bergamo during the summer. Inter Milan were among the clubs eager to sign him, but negotiations fell through after both sides failed to agree on a transfer fee.
The failed move led to a brief standoff between Lookman and the club, disrupting Atalanta’s preseason preparations. However, after weeks of tension, the 28-year-old has been reintegrated into the squad and seems to be regaining his rhythm.
Lookman made his first start under new coach Ivan Juric in the goalless draw against Lazio at the weekend, where his energetic display earned praise.
“Lookman? Today we put in a very high-level performance; in the second half, he lit up completely,” Juric told Fcinter1908. “I also liked how he covered the flank in the final minutes, performing impeccable defensive work.”
Though still short on full match fitness, Lookman came close to scoring, seeing a powerful header saved brilliantly by the goalkeeper. Juric described the effort as “unlucky but impressive.”
Atalanta, who also drew blank in their Champions League game against Slavia Prague, will be counting on Lookman’s goals to spark their attack in the coming weeks.
Before the end of the year, however, the club will need to open talks about his future. While his contract still has two years left, both parties are expected to discuss new terms to prevent another transfer dispute.
Atalanta reportedly remain firm on their valuation of the African Footballer of the Year, unwilling to sell below a set figure. For now, Lookman’s focus will be on rediscovering his scoring form and helping La Dea climb up the Serie A and European tables.
